MOAS

icon-helpMOAS (the Migrant Offshore Aid Station) was founded after 400 migrants drowned near the Italian island of Lampedusa in 2013.  MOAS patrols major migrant shipping lanes with a 40-metre (130 ft) expedition vessel, the M.Y. Phoenix, two Remote Piloted Aircraft, two RHIBs (rigid-hulled inflatable boats), and a highly experienced team of rescuers and paramedics. MOAS is also able to coordinate rescues by locating, coordinating, monitoring, and assisting vessels in distress.

The MOAS crew assess the migrants’ needs using the two RHIBs stocked with water, non-perishable food, life jackets, blankets, and medical supplies available for speedy distribution. When the team encounters someone who needs urgent medical care, or a vessel in danger of sinking, they stabilize the person or vessel until public authorities arrive and better care becomes available. In emergencies the Phoenix can carry over 400 souls that would otherwise perish in the waters of the Mediterranean.

MOAS has patrolled the central Mediterranean, namely the route from Libya to Sicily since August 2014. This route is traveled by migrants from huge range of war-torn and poverty stricken countries from the sub-Sahara to the Middle East. In November 2015 MOAS announced they are launching a new mission with a new ship that will patrol the treacherous water in the Aegean Sea. This route between Turkey and Greece is claiming the lives of thousands of predominantly Syrian migrants, Their lives in Syria shattered, they risk death at the hands of militants on the way to Turkey and then have to risk it all once more in unsafe vessels crossing the Aegean. Is this any way to live? Please help us save lives and contribute your Selfie to the MOAS grid and spread the word on social media.

Our Milestones

Rather than waiting for a grid to fill and then donating the funds to our charities we send funds when we reach certain milestones:

  1. $1,000
  2. $5,000
  3. $25,000
  4. $50,000
  5. Remaining $19,000

At each milestone we encourage the charity to share the donation which in turn motivates more people to contribute and fill the grid quicker. Please note that our grids are structured to take into account the large PayPal processing fees and our own running costs. Our agreements with charities always stipulate that at least 90% of all revenues are donated!
